Politics and Voting

John Jay John Jay (12/12/1745 - 05/17/1829) was a revolutionary, statesman, diplomat, Original Chief Justice of the US Supreme Court (1789 - 1795), President of the American Bible Society, and an abolitionist who succeeded in 1799 of signing a law to emancipate the slaves in New York.

In reference to voting, John Jay stated: "Providence has given to our people the choice of their rulers. It is the duty, as well as the privilege and interest, of our Christian nation to select and prefer Christians for their rulers".

I receive a lot of questions and comments from Christians about what role Christians should play in politics. A few of the comments I receive are as follows: "Jesus never got involved in politics and Christians should not try to legislate their morality--we should not try to create a theocracy".

First, I will address the subject of "Jesus never got involved in politics". This argument is illogical and is an argument from silence. Jesus Christ--the eternal Son of God--ordained that governments would exist and established them to administer justice, protect its citizens and reward good behavior and punish evil, which included the death penalty (see Romans 13:1-5). Christ had no problem in dealing with the Pharisees, Sadducees and the religious leaders of Israel (Matt. 23). He also commanded that people should pay their taxes to Caesar (Matt. 22:17-21). This sounds political to me. The Gospel that Christ and the Apostles preached was for all classes of people, which included politicians (1 Tim. 2:1-2) and military personnel. Should firemen, police officers, federal agents, military men/women and political leaders who become Christians resign? Do you remember Cornelius, a centurion in the Italian Regiment? (Acts 10:1-8)--did he resign from his office? Christ is Lord over all areas of life--we are suppose to make laws in accordance with Christ. The Lordship of Christ is over all of life.

Second, the statement that "Christians should not try to legislate morality" is a stupid statement and inconsistent with the Bible. The above statement is a typical response by Christians and non-Christians who have a  "humanist worldview"--they think that "humanists" in government do not legislate their religion and values/morality. The following should be noted:

The "Humanist Manifesto I"--written in 1933 by Unitarian ministers--asserted that orthodox religion was in decline and that it should be replaced by a rational, man-centered, non-theistic religion. John Dewey--one of the signatories to the "Humanist Manifesto I" and credited with establishing the "Atheistic Humanist" philosophy of government school teaching--described "Humanism" as our "common faith" and John Huxley called it "Religion without Revelation"--if one looks at the first "Humanist Manifesto", they will discover that it speaks openly about "Humanism" as a religion. In 1961, the U.S. Supreme Court cited "Secular Humanism" as a religion--see Torcaso v. Watkins (367 U.S. 488). See article "Is "Secular Humanism" a "Religion"? - PDF.

Yes, humanism is a religion--it tells one what to believe in and how to live. Definition for the word "religion" from the Merriam-Webster's dictionary: "A cause, principle, or system of beliefs held to with ardor and faith". Unfortunately, many Christians have fallen prey to pagan pre-Socratic Greek philosophic dichotomies such as the sacred/secular and faith/reason dichotomies. This is a false piety and the Christian humanist thinks that his/her worldview stays in the church. Dr. Francis Schaeffer stated the following about Christians taking the above position: "A Christian humanist is still a humanist". Not applying the Lordship of Christ to politics is sin and is denying the Lordship of Christ. [The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU)--a socialist anti-Christian organization founded in 1919 by Unitarian socialist Roger Baldwin; he formed the organization while at a party where Socialist Party leader Norman Thomas, Elizabeth Gurley Flynn (the future leader of the Communist Party USA), and Soviet Spy, Agnes Smedley--has done a great job in brainwashing Christians into thinking that the Christian religion should have no part in politics except for their religious beliefs such as abortion, freedom for pedophiles, child molesters, special rights for homosexuals, gay marriage, etc. For a brief history on the origins of the ACLU, see the following website:  http://www.traditionalvalues.org/pdf_files/ACLU.pdf ]

Remember that a culture is judged on the basis of its laws, which are simply codified beliefs, values and morals (Jer. 6:22-23; Tit.1:12-13). Pre-Christian Greek and Roman pagan cultures codified anti-Biblical laws supporting child abuse, rape, suicide, incest, murder for entertainment, infanticide, etc. When the Christians starting influencing the culture, the anti-Biblical laws were repealed. Many 21st century Christians are disobeying God when it comes to non-involvement in government (1 Tim. 2:1-2; Rom. 13:6, 7; 1 Pet. 2:13-17; James 1:27; Acts 22:25-29; 25:11; Matt. 5:13, 14; 28:19).

Third, the statement that "Christians should not try to create a theocracy" stems from some Christians not understanding what a theocracy is and what the founding fathers believed in.  A "theocracy" is a government that is ruled directly by a religious authority or directly by God such as ancient Israel. An example of a modern day theocracy is the country of Iran.  A "Christian" by contrast is someone who has accepted Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior through grace alone, and through faith alone. He/she also believes that the Bible is the ultimate authority in matters of doctrine and morals and Christ is their King. The founding fathers never believed in a theocracy--they believed our laws had to based on some ultimate authority, which to the founding fathers was the ten commandments and Christian principles found in the Bible. A quote from  Noah Webster (1758-1843), Founding Father, Educator:

Let it be impressed on your mind that God commands you to choose for rulers just men who will rule in the fear of God [Exodus 18:21]...If the citizens neglect their duty and place unprincipled men in office, the government will soon be corrupted...If government fails to secure public prosperity and happiness, it must be because the citizens neglect the Divine commands, and elect bad men to make and administer the laws.

If there is not an absolute reference point (the true sovereign God), then all laws become arbitrary. As a result, anything can be justified if man is the measure of all things (what is right or wrong). Sexual immorality, genocide and so forth are then acceptable.  Dr. Gordon H. Clark stated in his book A Christian View of Men and Things:
"...Christian presuppositions justify civil governments of limited rights, whereas humanistic principles imply either anarchy or totalitarianism".

What about the State’s Authority over a citizen?  A summary extracted from The Encyclopedia of Practical Christianity, page 504, by Dr. Robert A. Morey about the State’s authority over citizens:

  • All authority resides in God (Dan. 4:28-37; Matt. 28-18).
  • All human authority is delegated authority, which means God will hold the person or institution accountable to Him for how they used their authority (Rev. 20:11-5).
  • No person or institution has absolute or intrinsic authority by God (John 19:10-11).
  • God’s delegated authority is only valid to leaders according to Scriptural guidelines and functions within Scriptural limits.
  • The Scriptures recognize four (4) sovereign spheres of authority
    1. Church (1Thess. 5:12-13; Heb. 13:17, 24 etc.)
    2. State (Rom.  13:1-7; 1 Pet. 2:13-17 etc.)
    3. Family (Eph. 5:22-29; Eph. 6:1-4, etc.)
    4. Business (Eph. 6:5-9; 1 Pet. 2:18-19, etc.)

The spheres might interact with each other, but should never invade each other in order to take authority which God delegated to the different spheres.  One example, the State should not be dictating to the church what it can preach or believe in—the State has delegated and limited authority by God in Scripture (Rom. 13::1-7).

Note: A legitimate government (per Bible) could be a Constitutional Republic, Parliamentary Republic, Monarchy, etc. However, a civil government becomes illegitimate and tyrannical (per Bible) when it takes control of all life.  Examples of tyranny in a government when its leaders controls or denies the following:

  • Freedom of religion;
  • Free speech;
  • Lawful assembly;
  • The right of self-defense (not allowing ownership of firearms--gun confiscation or very restrictive control);
  • Private property, etc.

This is why a foreign policy of promoting Democracy is a farce. This country (USA) is a Republic and not a Democracy.  Democracies usually will not work in other countries such as the Middle East unless the society adopts a Biblical Protestant/Calvinist worldview. Otherwise the citizens of a country will elect leaders who will deny those rights that the United States enjoys because they are electing people based on their worldview—our government should be promoting or demanding the above mentioned rights are granted to citizens of every nation as basic human rights, not that they have a Democracy. Western Europe, Australia and Canada are Democratic nations, but this is what has happened in these countries:

  • Persecuting people of the Christian faith (Germany arrested Christian parents for home schooling their children);
  • Hate crime laws (silencing free speech such as religious teachings against homosexuality);
  • Canada, Australia and Sweden have already arrested Christian pastors for speaking out against homosexuality and other religions;
  • Japan is a police state;
  • Confiscation of firearms from law-abiding citizens that want to protect themselves from criminals or an evil government (in Africa, Western and Eastern European countries millions of innocent citizens have died because of gun confiscation—see 2nd Amendment link on website) and so on.

Wow, Democracy has really brought freedom in these secular humanist nations! Of course, it is better than communism (an evil system), but Western Europe is heading towards or is already an anti-God, socialist police state because they have rejected Biblical Protestant Christianity. [Two recommended books on this subject: 1. When is it Right to Fight? by Dr. Robert A. Morey <www.faithdefenders.com>; 2. A Christian View of Men and Things, by Dr. Gordon H. What should a Christian and non-Christian concerned citizen do?

We are faced with serious problems with both of the major political parties in the United States (Republican and Democrat). Many are one-worlders-- individuals who think we should give up our national sovereignty for a one world government and religion--and free traders (which means that we should all work for $5.00 an hour except for the elites). Yes, I am a union member. President Clinton, President Bush and President Obama are one-worlders and free traders. President Clinton signed the NAFTA agreement, which had devastating consequences for the middle class--the unions opposed the bill, but are currently not promoting the best interests of the American worker. Most unions are not opposing illegal immigration, Cap and Trade, free trade, anti-second Amendment legislation, gay marriage, hate crimes bill and liberal judges.

However, President Bush should be complimented for his appointment of two outstanding Supreme Court justices (John Roberts and Samuel Alito) and his opposition to many UN policies that want to abolish this nations Constitution and Bill of Rights, especially the 2nd Amendment. The President and Secretary of State have to deal with a State Department that is filled with a lot traitors to this country and do not believe in the Bill of Rights and Constitution.

See article on NAFTA, CAFTA & WTO.  It is important that one is registered in a party and declares a party affiliation so they can elect God fearing candidates, who care about the poor, working class, moral values (from the Bible), the Constitution and Bill of Rights (the U.S. is a Republic, has an Electoral College and the founding fathers did not believe in a "pure democracy" because it would lead to  anarchy). Many people do not vote in the primary elections--I have seen a lot of honorable primary candidates not get elected because of the low turn out and citizens not registered in a party (most States require that one has be registered in that party to vote in the primary--this does not mean one cannot vote for the other party candidate in the general election). Many times a Christian and non-Christian is stuck with voting for the lesser of two evils. (See article "Whom Do We Elect"?: http://www.jbs.org/node/471.) For example, if you have two candidates who are free traders and one- worlders, but one candidate still has respect for the Constitution, 2nd Amendment, the sanctity of marriage, and religious freedom and the other candidate is pro-homosexual, anti-2nd Amendment, anti-Christian values, it is a no brainer which one to vote for.  (It would be nice if individuals supported a God fearing third party--I doubt this will happen.)  Here are some steps to take:

1. A Christian should be registered to vote--one can register online.    https://ssl.capwiz.com/traditional/e4/nvra/?action=form&state=

Register to Vote

2. Take the test: "How would God Vote?"—PDF

Sometimes a citizen has to vote for the lesser of two evils; however, if a Christian or non-Christian votes for candidates who have sold out to humanistic and anti-God positions, this is sin and not applying the Lordship of Christ in all areas of life (see my Politics/Voting, Constitution, Global Warming, Militant Lifestyles and Personal Finance/Economic Issues links on this website for further information on these topics)See the following (23) websites for helpful voter information:

JBS.org Freedom Campaign

What is a Rockefeller Republican or Democrat?

In 1964, Senator Barry Goldwater, a conservative who did not fit the establishment mold, managed to get the GOP presidential nomination. Not only did the Democratic Party work against him, but his own party also worked against him—Nelson Rockefeller, a New York governor and leader of the liberal (secular humanist) establishment wing of the GOP, helped to sabotage Goldwater’s campaign. As a result, Barry Goldwater lost the 1964 election to Lyndon Johnson (Democrat), another big liberal (humanist) who plunged America into the Vietnam War. [It should be noted that President Ronald Reagan [Republican (1981-1989)] rejected the Rockefeller wing of the Republican Party, although he had to work with, promote some of their policies and appoint them to various positions—the reason you have some of your legal rights in the U.S. are a direct result of President Reagan appointing a strict-constructionist judge to the Supreme Court (Justice Antonin Gregory Scalia; Justice Clarence Thomas—another great judge—was appointed by former President George H. W. Bush), signing into law the Equal Access Act to cure anti-religious bigotry by some public school officials, and so on.]

Modern humanists/liberals do not believe in the historic understanding of the Constitution and Bill of Rights and thus the historic meaning of freedom of religion—in other words, you can believe what you want, but cannot practice it or teach religion (Biblical Christianity) to your children

[It should be noted that the NJIAT President is not promoting a conspiracy theory, but only pointing out that if true conservative Republicans, Democrats or third party members do not participate in the primary election and general election then the humanists will control the party’s platform and policies-- there will not be a one-world government and one-world religion until the very end when Satan will be allowed to send strong delusion with miraculous powers (2 Thessalonians). We only have small attempts by one-worlders to manipulate things-- there are groups and foundations (see Civic Organizations link for book titled Foundations of Betrayal) that are trying to undermine this country, Constitution and Bill of Rights and those individuals controlling such groups or foundations should be tried for treason.]

What are the policies of a Rockefeller Republican or Democrat?

They are internationalists, one-worlders, so-called free traders (promoting unfair trade with other countries at the expense of U.S. manufacturers, which is destroying the blue-collar workers and the middle-class—the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA), that was signed into law by President Bill Clinton (Democrat) on 12/08/93 and took effect on 01/01/94, is one example of unfair trade that has caused production to move out of the U.S. for cheap-labor countries like Mexico and China--who think the United States should not be sovereign and we should adhere to the World Court and international law instead of our own Constitution.

What positions and laws should the Republican, Democrat & Third parties support and not support?

Both major parties should not be promoting or legislating wickedness such as civil unions, gay marriage, gay adoption, abortion, androgyny [ (Rom. 1:26-27); cross-dressing is even condemned (Deut. 22:5)], hate crime laws (a code word for silencing different opinions or restricting or outlawing religious freedom that has already occurred in Canada and many parts of Europe), anti-2nd Amendment laws (the right of self-defense) against law-abiding citizens, anti-military, anti-family [mocking the father’s headship in the family and male’s headship in the church--the early church did have women deaconesses and elders (mature women/spiritually mature—1 Timothy 5:9-13, Titus 2:3-5, the presbutidas-i.e., women elders); however, the women elders discipled the young women and were under the authority of the male elders and had no authority over the men in the church and were not pastors], oppression of widows, orphans, etc. (James 1:27), exploiting the wage earner/advice to the rich (James 5:4-5), persecuting the Boy Scouts, laws against drilling for oil in our own land, appointing activist/humanist judges who do not believe in the original intent of the Constitution, global warming laws (based on pseudo-science), uncontrollable/unsealed borders with rampant illegal immigration, etc.

Nations will be judged by the Almighty God of the Bible on their anti-Biblical laws legislated in addition to the rejection of the Messiah—

“For all the nations have drunk from the wine of her sexual immorality, and the kings of the earth have committed sexual immorality with her. The merchants of the earth have become rich from the power of her luxury. Then I heard a voice from heaven saying, “Come out of her, my people, so that you don’t participate in her sins and suffer from her plagues. For her sins are piled as high as heaven, and God has remembered her crimes. Do to her as she herself has done. Give her double for her deeds. Mix a double drink for her in the cup she mixed.” [Revelation 18:3-6 (ISV).]

A nation’s culture reflects its worldview (beliefs, values, morals, etc.)  A culture is judged on the basis of its laws, which are codified beliefs, values, and morals (Jeremiah 6:22-23; Titus 1:12-13).  Pre-Christian Greek and Roman pagan cultures codified anti-biblical laws supporting infanticide, abortion, child abuse and rape, suicide, incest, murder for entertainment, etc.  These laws were changed after the Christians became involved in the culture-forming process in the Roman Empire.  There are no secular/sacred, nature/grace (Thomas Aquinas), mind/matter (Plato), form/essence (Aristotle) and phenomenal/noumenal (Emmanuel Kant) dichotomies taught in the bible—Christ is Lord over all of life as taught by the Bible and Reformation, which believed in sola scriptura (special revelation) in deciding truth, morals, justice and beauty.  Yes, all of life is under the Lordship of Christ—all of life is religious and there is no secular realm. Unfortunately, Thomas Aquinas (1225-1274 A.D.) embraced Aristotle’s philosophy [although his intention was to defend Christianity] and the return of the dichotomistic thought of “Essence/Form” that became “Grace/Nature”-- ”—reason vs. faith, which was renamed “nature” and “grace”; some things were true according to reason and some things were true according to faith.  This is not Biblical. The real debate is between “special revelation” vs. “human reason”, “experience”, etc. in determining truth—one cannot have absolutes without a sovereign God.

(In other words, it was an attempt by the Greek philosophers to reconcile the contradictory philosophies of pre-Socratic philosophers Parmenides (6th-5th century B.C. and “The Father of Rationalism”), which taught:

  • Reality is what you think it is (human autonomy, ontological thinking)
  • Being is static and eternal—does not move or change, no such thing as rust
  • Reality is perfect
  • There are no particulars—the car is not separate from the parking lot
  • The crippled guy is an illusion; this is what Hinduism--whose origins can be traced to a mysterious tribe of Europeans called the Aryans, who invaded and conquered Northern India between 1500 BC and 500 BC (the light skinned Brahmins of Northern India claim to be their physical and spiritual descendants)--Zen Buddhism, Christian Science Church teach; that is--there is no evil, there is no pain, there is no death, reality is an illusion, etc. and,

Heraclitus (6th-5th century B.C. and “The Father of Empiricism” and “Skepticism”), which taught:

  • Knowledge is related strictly to the senses—it comes by way of the senses (touch, taste, smell, hear and feel)
  • Knowledge is reduced to things experienced from the five senses
  • No such thing as being
  • Everything is changing (in flux)—nothing remains the same
  • Change is real; permanence is an illusion1

[For further information on Greek philosophy (Natural Theology), see the Apologetics link on this website. Apostle Paul was hostile and caustic towards Greek philosophy, “See to it that no one enslaves you through philosophy and empty deceit according to human tradition, according to the basic principles of the world, and not according to Christ” (Colossians 2:8, ISV).]

Both Parmenides and Heraclitus’s philosophies were failures and all subsequent philosophies thereafter except Biblical Christianity (special revelation).  Absolute idealism does not correspond to experience, which is the final test.  Pour hot water on an idealist who says there is no pain and you will discover there is pain. Also, if every thing is one, perfect, and all is God, where did evil come from?  Senses are not trustworthy either and hence you end up with no knowledge. Individuals (adhering to empiricism) are assuming that only thru your senses you can have knowledge and they realize you cannot have certain knowledge because one’s senses can be unreliable like looking at an oar in the water—to be certain there that there is no certain knowledge is self-refuting

Aquinas opened the door for secular humanism to take over politics, ethics, science, Western philosophy, art, and theology in Europe and America. This is why the secular humanists want to root out all sacred symbols from our society such as “In God we trust” on our coins.  Also, American Christians developed an inward focus on personal piety—as a result of the Fundamentalist-Liberal debate in the 1920’s--to the exclusion of any concern for the culture-forming process.  (This extreme separationism was in clear violation of Apostle Paul’s explicit statements in I Cor. 5:9-13.) It is sad that many so-called Christians in the 21st century would not know a Christian World and Life View if it bit them on the “ASS”.

What about U.S. Citizens who have different faiths?

It is in the best interest for any U.S. citizen no matter what their religious background is (Hindu, Sikh, Muslim, Skeptic, Jew, liberal Protestant, Catholic, etc.) to vote for candidates that stand for a biblical worldview mentioned above because it will guarantee your religious freedom and rights granted to you under the Constitution and Bill of Rights.  Promoting secular humanism (man is the measure of all thingsand there are no absolutes—everything is relative)and voting for humanist politicians will guarantee the elimination of your freedoms and bring judgment on this nation!   A quote from Charles Dickens in 1845 about the Protestant Swiss canton influence on economics and politics between nations:

On the Protestant side, neatness, cheerfulness, industry, education, continued aspiration after better things. On the Catholic side, dirt, disease, ignorance, squalor and misery. I have so constantly observed the like of this since I first came abroad, that I have a sad misgiving that the religion of Ireland lies at the root of all its sorrows.

Note: The 1960’s hippies (which were called by the Sheriff’s Officers, who worked in the Hunterdon County jail located in NJ in the 1960’s & 70’s,  “simple-minded hippies”—the county jails were under the Sheriff’s Dept. at that time) who promoted so-called love (unauthorized nooki before marriage & other forms of immorality) over war did not understand the definition of love.  Loverejoices in truth according to the Apostle and the word “truth” defined biblically is used in its ethical sense of “righteousness according to God’s law.”  It means “Right or True living” (1 John 1:6; 3 John 3, 4).

Note: if you are a union member and the union is supporting special rights for homosexuals, gay marriage, civil unions, anti-Christian values, against the 2nd Amendment, etc., one should vote the union official out of office or the union membership should consider joining another union. [I am a union member and have always fought for the rights of the working class citizens--I was against NAFTA and other so-called free trade polices. However, if a union members disregards God, this will have devastating consequences for the working class people and the nation. "Righteousness exalts a nation" (Proverbs 14:34).]
